From Classroom to Film Set: The Southern Incubator for Rising Actors

Developing the ability to perform and direct dramatic acting” is one of our department’s seven core competencies, designed to support both on-camera and behind-the-scenes career paths. Through a diversified curriculum, we build solid acting techniques and theoretical foundations. Assistant Professor Lu Jin-Ming plays a key role, offering professional courses such as EMI All-English Screen Performance (Academic Year 2022). These courses not only deliver professional knowledge in a fully English environment but also enhance students’ international communication skills. In addition, Professor Lu actively guides students to form a dedicated Acting Study Community & Reading Group that continually strengthens practical performance skills through table reads and staged scenes.

Guided by our “learning by doing” philosophy, we create abundant hands-on opportunities. Students are required to produce a short film every semester—from first-year “Principles of Film & TV Production” to second-year “Film Production,” and onward to third-year “Independent Short Production.” This steady pipeline creates ongoing casting needs. At the end-of-semester “Golden Seed Film Festival,” performance categories such as Best Actor and Best Actress directly recognize character interpretation and acting craft. These intensive productions not only give student actors a stage to hone their skills but also extend opportunities to emerging actors in southern Taiwan and the broader community, putting collaborative creation into practice.

Within this environment, we’ve witnessed many students—through diligence and rigorous training—step onto professional stages and shine at festivals at home and abroad, demonstrating that our program effectively supports their dreams of becoming actors.
